Christian Charles Phillip Bale (born January 30, 1974 in Haverfordwest , Pembrokeshire , Wales ) is a British - American actor . In 2011 he received the Oscar and the Golden Globe for best supporting actor in The Fighter . As part of the Golden Globe Awards 2019 , he received the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy for his impersonation of Dick Cheney in Adam McKay's Political Satire Vice - The Second Man .

Life

His father, the entrepreneur and activist David Bale (1941–2003), comes from South Africa, his mother Jenny James from England. He has an older half-sister and two sisters. Bale got around a lot in his youth. The family lived in Wales, England and Portugal , among others . Bale dropped out of school when he was sixteen. In 1991, his parents divorced. While his mother stayed in England with his sisters, Bale moved with his father to Los Angeles , California at the age of seventeen .

Career

Christian Bale came into contact with film and television at an early age. In 1983 he was seen in various commercials (including for Pac-Man ) on British television. He had his first major role in 1986 in the television adaptation Anastasia . In the children's film Mio, My Mio he got his second leading role. In 1987 he was from Steven Spielberg for the role of young main character in the movie Empire of the Sun selected. The film Swing Kids by Thomas Carter , in which he participated five years later, was a failure. For the role in this film, as well as the 1992 film Die Zeitungsjungen , he trained in dance and martial arts for ten weeks . On the recommendation of Winona Ryder , he was for a role in 1994 Little Women selected and two years later, Bale received a role alongside Nicole Kidman in Portrait of a Lady by Jane Campion .

At Velvet Goldmine , he was a reporter whose work forced himself to remember all that he wanted to forget. In A Midsummer Night's Dream he played Demetrius . He won the Chlotrudis Award in 2001 for his portrayal of the psychopath Patrick Bateman in American Psycho . In the following years Bale could be seen in Equilibrium, among others. In 2004 he surprised everyone in the film The Machinist , in which he played an emaciated factory worker. For this role, Bale lost almost 30 kilograms. To get the role of Batman in Christopher Nolan's comic adaptation Batman Begins from 2005, he had to pick up again. That's why he was forced to build enough muscle mass for six months with hard physical training to be able to credibly embody the comic hero on screen.

In 2006, he played the German-American fighter pilot Dieter Dengler in Werner Herzog's film Rescue Dawn , who was shot down over Laos during the Vietnam War and who fled a prisoner-of-war camp of Pathet Lao at risk of death .

In 2007 he played Bob Dylan in I'm Not There . In the same year he shot the Western Death Train to Yuma . In 2008 he appeared again as Batman in the hugely successful comic book adaptation The Dark Knight , which was a sequel to Batman Begins .

In 2009 he played John Connor in Terminator: Redemption , the fourth installment in the Terminator series. Bale has signed a contract for two more Terminator films. In February 2009, an audio recording was published on the Internet that shows Bale having a tantrum on the set of Terminator: Salvation : Cinematographer Shane Hurlbut had problems with the light in one scene, whereupon Bale lost his temper and the man yelled at him for minutes, grossly insulting him and threatening not to appear on the set until the technician was fired. Bale publicly apologized for his reaction, which he described as completely exaggerated.

2009 Bale took over the role of the FBI -Agenten Melvin Purvis in Public Enemies as an opponent of by Johnny Depp embodied John Dillinger .

In David O. Russell's boxing drama The Fighter , Bale slipped into the role of boxer and trainer Dicky Eklund alongside title character Mark Wahlberg (as Micky Ward ) . This earned him numerous film awards, including the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor and his first Oscar in the same category.

Bale, who signed a contract for three Batman films, played the main character Bruce Wayne alias Batman for the last time in The Dark Knight Rises in 2012 . The film also became a big box-office hit.

Independently of the studio, Bale visited the victims of the Aurora shooting at the Swedish Medical Center in Englewood , Colorado on July 24, 2012 .

In December 2018, the biography Vice came to US cinemas about the US Vice President Dick Cheney . For the portrayal of the eponymous person, Bale received a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actor - Comedy or Musical . In 2019, he played the British racing driver Ken Miles in the film Le Mans 66 - Against Every Chance . For his performance he was again nominated for a Golden Globe Award in the category Best Actor - Drama .

Bale has been married to former model and make-up artist Sibi Blažić since 2000 . The couple have two children together: a daughter, who was born in Santa Monica , California, in 2005 , and a son, who was born in August 2014. In addition to British citizenship , Bale has also been US citizens since 2014 .

Bale's stepmother is the American feminist , journalist and suffragette Gloria Steinem . Christian Bale is an active supporter of environmental organizations such as Sea Shepherd , Greenpeace , World Wide Fund for Nature and the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund .
