The film Maria - The Holy Mother of God (DVD title: Jesus ) tells the story of Jesus of Nazareth from the point of view of his mother Mary and addresses events that the two of them also experienced together, starting with the proclamation of the birth of Jesus about the delivery in Bethlehem up to the crucifixion and resurrection .

action

In the introduction you get to know the characters, such as Maria and Joseph, who live in a small village called Nazareth. On a hill, Mary received a prophecy that she would expect a child from the Holy Spirit. Then she tells Joseph about what happened. But he doesn't believe her because he thinks she cheated on him and eventually leaves her. That same night Joseph had a dream in which God spoke to him and appealed to him to trust her. The next day the people want to stone Mary, but Joseph saves her by saying they will get married the next day. 9 months later, Joseph and Mary travel to Bethlehem based on the census. But all hostels are occupied and they can only find accommodation in a stable. There she gives birth to the child and calls it Jesus, as God commanded her. Having heard of the birth of the Messiah, many shepherds come to the stable. Because King Herod sees his power in danger, he has all male babies killed. But Mary and Joseph can flee in time. They return to Nazareth 12 years later. There they were warmly welcomed as no one had expected their return. One morning Jesus has disappeared and Joseph and Mary go on a frightened search. However, because God had commanded him to do so, he went to the temple to preach with the priests there. They were impressed by the knowledge of Jesus. 18 years later, Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River. Joseph had died in the meantime, and Jesus left his mother alone to travel. After he finished his journey, he returned with his disciples whom he had met during this time. All were invited to Jesus' cousin's wedding, where he performed his first miracle by turning water into wine. After this miracle he spoke to his people and revealed himself to be the Messiah and spread his teachings. He met with rejection from the people and had to leave the village. Then he moved to another village and healed the sick there, calling them his family. When Judas betrayed Jesus, he was condemned for opposing Rome. He was crucified in front of his mother. He refused the anesthetic and asked why God had abandoned him. It was locked in a pit, but after a few days the stone in front of it was pushed away and the pit was empty. Jesus was risen and showed himself to Mary on the hill where she had received the prophecy. In the end, Mary appeals to the audience to spread Jesus' teaching and to live and love like Jesus.

production

The film was shot in Hungary and plays with the basic expectations of Bible film viewers. For example, Mary must always wear a blue robe and Jesus must have blue eyes.

For the roles, director Kevin Connor was able to win actors, including Geraldine Chaplin and Christian Bale .

background

In the opening credits it is mentioned that the filmmakers allowed themselves some poetic liberties, but that the film does justice to the historical significance of the biblical story of Mary and Jesus. The whole story represents the experience and suffering from Mary's point of view. Little is learned about the person of Jesus in detail. However, the film is very close to the Bible. Therefore, the film does not show Jesus as a historical person because many years are missing and they adhere to religious beliefs, so that for example Mary is portrayed as having never sinned and making no mistakes. Jesus is portrayed in the film according to his time. He has dark, long hair and doesn't have too many muscles.
