David Threlfall

David Threlfall (born October 12, 1953 in Manchester , England ) is a British film, television and theater actor and director . He became internationally known for his leading role as the alcoholic family man Frank Gallagher , which he played in 11 seasons of the television series Shameless from 2004 to 2013 .

Life

Threlfall was born in 1953 as the son of a plumber. He took an early interest in the theater and appeared in a school production of Arthur Miller's drama Witch Hunt . He dropped out of the Sheffield School of Design after a year to concentrate on acting. He studied for three years at the Manchester Polytechnic theater school .

Since the mid-1970s he has appeared in British film and television productions. Mike Leigh hired Threlfall immediately after graduating in 1977 for the lead role in the television film The Kiss of Death . From 1977 to 1980 Threlfall appeared in nine different theater productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company , in Stratford-upon-Avon ( RST and The Other Place), London ( West End ) and New York City ( Broadway ). As a result, his acting career picked up speed, and twenty more plays with various English ensembles have been added since then. In 1983 he played Vasily Stalin in Jack Gold's television film The Red Monarch . From the end of the 1980s, Threlfall also appeared in major cinema productions such as The Russian House , The Curse of the Whales or The Hour of the Patriots . In the 1993 television film Diana: Her True Story he starred as Charles, Prince of Wales . In the Bible adaptation Maria - The Holy Mother of God he portrayed Joseph of Nazareth . 2001 Threlfall played the administrative lawyer Friedrich Wilhelm Kritzinger in the television film Die Wannsee Conference .

From 2004 Threlfall took over the role of the alcoholic family man Frank Gallagher in the Channel 4 television series Shameless , which he embodied in a total of 138 episodes by 2013. Since the third season he has sporadically directed a total of 19 episodes of the series . From season six, Threlfall was also executive producer of the series.

After the end of Shameless , Threlfall appeared in the TV series Ripper Street as Abel Croker and Troy - Fall of a City as Priam .

In 2013 he was made an honorary Doctor of Arts by Manchester Metropolitan University in recognition of his services as a film, television and theater actor and director .

Threlfall has been married to Bosnian actress Brana Bajic since 1995 , with whom he has two sons. The family lives in London .
