action

Robinson was a submarine captain for 30 years , the last 11 of which were with Agora, an undersea salvage company. Recently divorced and estranged from his young son, he was given notice without notice, with only a small severance payment.

Robinson later meets his friend Kurston and a Russian named Blackie over a drink. Kurston talks about an idea to make money. A German submarine sank off the coast of Georgia with a load of gold weighing several tons during the Second World War and her former employer Agora found out the location of the submarine, but was unable to recover it due to a Russian-Georgian conflict. He also reports on his plan to secretly recover the gold. To fund the project, Robinson meets a funder named Lewis.

A Lewis employee, Daniels, is supposed to accompany the expedition. Robinson is visited by a young man, Tobin, who informs him of Kurston's suicide. Robinson offers Tobin a ride. Together with the previously assembled team of former colleagues and their friends, each a specialist for a specific task, they travel to Sevastopol , where an old, shabby submarine is purchased. The crew consists of half Russians and half British, which means communication problems. Blackie speaks both languages.

Due to the confined space and cultural differences, tension between the two groups begins to increase. Robinson also announces the decision that the loot, after deducting what the financier Lewis claims as the agreed commission, should be divided equally between everyone. Taking into account the purchasing power of their home countries, some of the British feel unjustly rewarded and a fight ensues in the engine room, in which Fraser stabs Blackie with a knife. In the scuffle that ensues, a fire breaks out, causing an explosion with two more dead and locking the boat to the bottom of the sea.

After initial mistrust, the rest of the team found together again through Robinson’s mediation to free themselves from the unfortunate and life-threatening situation.

The submarine's drive shaft was badly damaged by the explosion. Because of their proximity to the German submarine, they came up with the plan to use the drive shaft of this submarine to repair their own boat. Robinson sends Tobin with Fraser and another diver to get the drive shaft by rope sled. But there they pack the gold they found on the sledge. The third diver dies in an accident on the arduous way back with the cargo weighing several tons. The driveshaft is installed successfully and most of the gold can be salvaged.

Daniels confesses to Robinson that his former employer, Agora, set it all up. They are supposed to do the dangerous work, and as soon as the submarine shows up, Robinson and his crew would be arrested by the Russians and Agora would take over the gold. Lewis was just a committed actor. Thereupon Robinson decides to go underwater to Turkey to avoid the Russians and the loss of the gold. After a navigation error, he decides against the will of the crew to take a risky trip through a narrow canal. According to his calculations, the current from the submarine's batteries is not enough for a safe, but significantly longer detour. Daniels now persuades Fraser to murder the machinist Zaytsev and thus force Robinson to surrender, as there are no longer enough men to safely operate the submarine. But then another explosion sends the submarine back to the ocean floor and it begins to fill up.

Fraser and the rest of the crew try to fix the leaks, but their efforts are futile. Before they can escape from the full section, the panicked Daniels locks the bulkhead behind him and lets the three men drown, but already at the bulkhead that needs to be locked, his torn clothes get caught and he himself is trapped in the rising water. Morozov refuses the rescue and closes the last bulkhead. Robinson, Tobin and Morozov are now in the front part of the boat, where Robinson has hidden three rescue suits. Robinson evacuates Tobin and Morozov through the torpedo tubes and explains to the worried Tobin beforehand that he will follow himself, which, however, is not possible without outside help (actuating the torpedo tube mechanics). Soon afterwards, instead of Robinson, the rescued persons on the sea surface show the third rescue suit with some of the gold and a photo of Robinson's family.

background

The location (mainly the interior shots) in front of Strood

The submarine, which is mainly used for indoor shots, is a Russian Foxtrot class submarine that was retired in mid-1993 . It is moored under the name " U-475 Black Widow " in the River Medway between Rochester and Strood and is privately owned. Today's run-down state is the same as in the film.

The language difference also corresponded to the conditions at the location. In order to fill the Russian workforce, Kevin Macdonald refrained from employing Western actors, "who just pretend they are Russian", and instead hired actors from Russia who - as in the film - actually spoke no English .

Black Sea was awarded the Black Lion for best film at the 24th Courmayeur Noir Film Festival , which takes place in Courmayeur in northwestern Italy .
