Strood is a town in the north of the county of Kent in England . It belongs to the unitary authority Medway , has approx. 33,200 inhabitants (as of 2001) and is located on the north-west bank of the River Medway near the cities of Gillingham , Chatham and Rochester approx. 45 kilometers as the crow flies from the City of London .

The computer scientist James H. Wilkinson (1919–1986), who received the Turing Award in 1970 , and the botany and ornithology illustrator Anne Pratt come from Strood .
