The English station Paddock Wood is at the junction of the Medway Valley Line from the South Eastern Main Line . The station and connections are operated by Southeastern . The station has three platforms.

history

The South Eastern Railway opened a route from Redhill via Ashford to Dover in 1842 . This route circumvented Maidstone . A station called Maidstone Road was opened on August 31, 1842 in a rural location eight miles north of the city. The village of Paddock Wood expanded rapidly around the station area. When the branch line to Maidstone West was opened in 1844 , the station was renamed Paddock Wood . Another branch line - the Hawkhurst Branch - to the village of Hawkhurst existed between 1892 and 1961.

The station has two tracks with outside platforms and two through tracks in between. There is also a head platform for the Medway Valley Line . Another head platform existed on the other side while the Hawkhurst Branch was in operation. The station building stands on the side for trains going north; There are long roofs on both platforms. The platforms are connected by an overpass.

Accidents

At 3:40 a.m. on May 5, 1919, a freight train from Bricklayers Arms to Margate ran over stopping signals and hit another freight train a little west of Paddock Wood. The train to Margate was pulled by the C-Class 721. It had 50 freight cars including three brake cars . The other train was hauled by the C-Class 61. The stoker on this train died in the accident. Although the main reason for the accident was that the driver of the train to Margate did not follow the signals, the dispatcher at the signal box in the east of Tonbridge was also reprimanded. The reason for this was that he did not give the driver sufficient warning that the route was not clear, even though the train had already been accepted by the dispatcher in Paddock Wood. The dispatcher in Paddock Wood had accepted the train with regulation 5 - "Section free, but station or branch blocked".

When a freight train rolled back in Paddock Wood station on December 8, 1961 at 2:02 a.m., a freight train passing through to Tonbridge ran over signals indicating stopping and collided with it. The debris from the accident piled under the bridge of the B2160 Maidstone Road. The route was blocked for over twelve hours.
