history

The station was built by the South Eastern Railway on the site of the former Hungerford Market Hall and opened on January 11, 1864. The architect was John Hawkshaw , who designed a 155-meter-long and 50-meter-wide wrought-iron roof that spanned all six platforms in a single arch. On May 15, 1865, the Charing Cross Hotel , designed by Edward Middleton Barry , opened with a facade inspired by the French Renaissance.

During maintenance work, the roof of the station hall collapsed on December 5, 1905. Most people were able to get to safety and stop an incoming train in time, so that only six people died. In 1907 the roof was replaced by a steel frame construction. Because of the damage caused by aerial bombs in World War II, the mansard roof of the hotel was replaced.

Since 1990, the rear of the concourse has been surrounded by a postmodern office building called Embankment Plaza designed by Terry Farrell's architectural firm . The main tenant is the auditing company PricewaterhouseCoopers .
