Southern is a former British rail operator and is now a brand of Govia Thameslink Railway . The subsidiary of Govia , a joint venture of the Go-Ahead Group and Keolis , operated the South Central franchise from 2001 to 2015 and the Gatwick Express from 2008 to 2015 . Since the merging of the Thameslink , Southern and Great Northern networks , Southern has only appeared as a brand name.
The route network extends from the London railway stations Victoria and London Bridge in the south adjoining counties Surrey and Sussex .
The company was officially called New Southern Railway Ltd. After taking over the concession from Connex South Central in October 2000, it initially appeared under the brand name South Central . On May 30, 2004 the name was changed; since then the company has appeared as Southern . This is to commemorate the former Southern Railway , which existed in the period of sectorization from 1923 to 1947 and was active in the same region.
As of June 2008, Southern will be responsible for operating the Gatwick Express between London Victoria Rail Station and Gatwick Airport , with additional high-speed trains to and from Brighton during rush hour .
The Southern network has been plagued by significant operational disruptions since 2016, which are partly due to a conflict with trade unions and partly to a lack of qualified train drivers. The Association of British Commuters , the Association of British Commuters , took legal action against the Department for Transport at the beginning of 2017 to clarify whether the Department of Transport disregarded an obligation to intervene.
