Northern Rail , or Northern for short , was a British railway company that offered numerous regional transport services in northern England . It was a joint venture between Abellio and the Serco Group . After the franchise expired, Northern Rail lost the tender and was replaced on April 1, 2016 by Northern , a subsidiary of DB Arriva .

Rolling stock

Northern operated around 313 leased regional trains of various types in 2015 . These included diesel multiple units of the TOPS classes 142, 144, 150, 153, 155, 156 and 158/159 and electric multiple units of the TOPS classes 319, 321, 322, 323 and the latest generation at the time, the class 333 .

Route network

Northern Rail operated a dense network of numerous regional connections in northern England , stretching from Carlisle and Newcastle upon Tyne in the north to Stoke-on-Trent and Nottingham in the south, and several hundred smaller stations to the major cities of Liverpool , Manchester , Leeds , Bradford , and Sheffield Tie up Doncaster . In this network was also the route of the former Stockton and Darlington Railway .
