South West Trains was a British railway company and a subsidiary of the Stagecoach Group . Their network stretched across the southwest of England , from Greater London to the counties of Surrey , Hampshire , Dorset and Wiltshire .
history
South West Trains won the tender for the route network in South West England in 1996 and took over passenger services on the routes from the dissolved state company British Rail . The concession was extended by four years in February 2003; the company had hoped for a concession period of 20 years. However, this did not prevent South West Trains from replacing the old and worn rolling stock with new trains from the Desiro UK series from Siemens Mobility . The subsequent tender was won again and the concession, which now also includes the Island Line on the Isle of Wight , was extended to 2017 on September 22, 2006. Since May 2004 the South West Trains smoking ban has been in effect on all trains .
On March 27, 2017 it was announced that the Stagecoach Group had lost the new franchise from 2017 to 2024; instead, South Western Railway , a consortium of FirstGroup and MTR Corporation , took over the network on August 20, 2017 .
Rolling stock
South West Trains last operated 293 sets of electric multiple units of the British classes 450 , 455 and 458 and 41 diesel multiple unit sets of the British classes 158 and 159 . On August 17, 2017, the class 707 was added with 30 five-part multiple units.

Route network
The main station and operating center was Waterloo in London . From here trains run u. a. to Basingstoke , Southampton , Bournemouth , Portsmouth , Guildford , Weymouth , Winchester , Salisbury , Exeter and Torquay . The largest passenger volume, however, had the suburban lines in the south-west of London. All of the South West Trains' trains ran via Clapham Junction , the station with the most train movements in Europe.
Most of the South West Trains routes are electrified . The power is supplied through the busbars common in southern England with 750 V direct current . Due to the high number of trains (up to 1,600 daily) and the lack of investment over many years, delays were frequent. In recent years, however, efforts have been made to correct these weaknesses. B. by building a central signal box at Waterloo station.
