Iarnród Éireann
Iarnród Éireann (pronunciation [ ˈiɘɾnɾoːd̪ ˈeːɾʲɘn ], Irish for "Railway of Ireland", English Irish Rail ) is the state railroad of the Republic of Ireland with its headquarters in Dublin . IÉ, which was founded in 1987 as an independent company , is now a subsidiary of the state-owned transport company Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ). Together with Northern Ireland Railways Northern Ireland Railways (NIR) Iarnród Éireann operates under the brand Enterprise a direct train between Dublin and Belfast .
Infrastructure
The rail network covers 2,400 km and is largely not electrified . There are 5100 bridges, 1240 level crossings and 147 stations or stops. The routes run in a star shape towards the capital Dublin in the east. The most important rail routes are the connections Dublin – Belfast via Dundalk and Dublin – Cork . Several lines are electrified in the greater Dublin area; they are served by the suburban railway DART ( Dublin Area Rapid Transit ). The track gauge in Ireland is 1,600 mm.
Rolling stock
Between 2007 and 2012, Iarnród Éireann replaced all old intercity trains as part of the nationwide Transport 21 infrastructure program. Since then, diesel multiple units of the 22000 series have been running on the intercity routes. These trains were manufactured by a consortium consisting of Mitsui , Hyundai Rotem and the Tokyu Car Corporation .
A total of 28 three-part sets with 190 seats, 25 four-part sets with 262 seats and 10 five-part sets with 304 seats are in use. They can reach a top speed of 160 km / h and serve the routes from Dublin to Cork, Limerick, Tralee, Waterford, Galway, Westport, Sligo and Rosslare Europort.

Promotion numbers
In 2012, Iarnród Éireann carried 36.9 million passengers according to its own information, compared to 45.5 million in 2007.
Impending bankruptcy
At the end of 2016, the railway company was threatened with bankruptcy . In this case, the closure of all routes except the three connections from Dublin to Belfast, Limerick and Cork has been announced.
