Regional train

A regional train of the ÖBB

Regional train , abbreviated R , is a train type of the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). The regional train is the successor to the passenger train in Austria , does not have to stop at all stations like this one and only carries the second carriage class .

Areas of application

The trains are being replaced more and more by the Schnellbahn , S-Bahn for short. Regional trains currently run in East Tyrol , Styria , Upper Austria , Lower Austria , Vorarlberg , Burgenland , and occasionally also on the Salzburg-Tiroler-Bahn on the Schwarzach-St.Veit - Saalfelden section and the Tauernbahn on the Spittal-Millstättersee - Mallnitz-Obervellach section. Regional trains take over those somewhat longer connections that are too far away from the main rapid transit zone for S-Bahn operations.

Vehicle material

The electric three- and four-part Bombardier Talent set, which is used by ÖBB as the 4023/24 series , is increasingly being used here . The new Cityjet railcars have also been in use on some regional trains since December 2015 . Trains hauled by locomotives with “long Schlieren wagons” (see picture), which were in regular service a few years ago, are no longer seen in use that often. Other vehicle material has already been taken out of service. Class 5047 , 5147 and 5022 railcars are mostly used on non-electrified routes . Trains hauled by the “Herkules” diesel locomotive (ÖBB BR 2016) are also often to be found.
