Dublin Area Rapid Transit ( DART for short ) is a S-Bahn- like local transport system that has been connecting the suburbs of the Irish capital Dublin with the city since 1984 . It is operated by the state railway company Iarnród Éireann .
prehistory
The route of the DART is historically significant - the section between the center of Dublin and Dún Laoghaire was opened as one of the first rail connections in Ireland as early as 1834 as the Dublin and Kingstown Railway .
description
The distinctive green trains use a 1500 volt direct current overhead contact line system created for this reason and the only electrified line in the Republic of Ireland. The trains of the diesel-powered Commuter suburban railway , which run between Malahide and Bray, among other things, complement the system .
Route and operation
The DART runs on the coast of Greater Dublin from Greystones in County Wicklow via Dublin to Howth Junction station. There the only line branches into two branches to Howth and Malahide . On the main route between Bray and Howth Junction, the trains run every quarter of an hour, every second train runs to or from Greystones.
Others
One of the most famous stations is on Lansdowne Road . To the north of the station, the track ran under the grandstand of the football and rugby stadium, which is also used for international matches . The stadium was demolished in 2007. In its place is now the Aviva Stadium . The station itself is immediately south of the stadium and the level intersection with Lansdowne Road.
