The Aviva Stadium ( Irish Staidiam Aviva ) is a rugby and football stadium in the Irish capital Dublin . It is owned by the Irish Rugby Football Union and the Football Association of Ireland . The Irish national rugby union team and the Irish national football team use it as their home ground. On May 14th 2010 the new arena was officially inaugurated by Taoiseach Brian Cowen .

Key data

The stadium has a horseshoe shape. All 51,700 seats are covered. While the west, east and south stands have four floors, the north tier is just a single stand. This is because the sports facility is in the city and residential buildings are in the north right next to the stadium. 10,000 premium seats are available on the second floor of the stadium; Moreover lie on the third floor VIP - boxes with 1,300 seats. There are more than 50 rooms in the stadium for events such as exhibitions, conferences, press conferences, banquets or Christmas parties. The press stand has 200 seats for journalists (expandable to 400 if required). The facade of the arena is glazed and the roof is covered with a transparent plastic skin. Aviva Stadium was the first UEFA Category 4 stadium in Ireland . A new floodlight system was installed in 2019 for the 2021 European Football Championship . The LED system meets all requirements for events organized by the UEFA , FIFA and World Rugby associations .

history

The Aviva Stadium replaced Lansdowne Road , opened in 1872 in 2010 , which was demolished in 2007 to make way for the Aviva Stadium. The rights to the name went to the insurance company Aviva Group Ireland for ten years , which paid 44 million . The Irish State contributed € 191 million of the total cost of € 410 million; the rugby and the football association shared the rest of the sum.

Sporting events

In addition to the home games of the rugby and national football team, the Leinster Rugby team welcomes their opponents at the Aviva Stadium. The final of the FAI Cup has been held here every year since 2010 . The 2010 UEFA Europa League final should also take place in Dublin. Since the renovation would not have been completed by then, the final was moved to the Hamburg Arena , and Dublin received the 2011 final for this . On August 11, 2010, the first international football match between the Irish national team and Argentina kicked off in the new stadium. It ended 1-0 for the Argentines. Aviva Stadium hosted the 2011 Nations Cup with the teams of Ireland, Northern Ireland , Wales and Scotland . The football tournament was to build on the British Home Championship , which was played from 1883 to 1984. But it stayed with the one event.

On May 18, 2013 the final of the European rugby cup competition Heineken Cup 2012/13 took place here. The home team could have won the third title in a row, but were eliminated in the preliminary round. The multiple French rugby champions RC Toulon won the competition in an all-French final in front of more than 50,000 spectators.
