The RDS Arena is a rugby and football stadium in the Irish capital, Dublin . It is located in the southern district of Ballsbridge on Anglesea Road and is owned by the Royal Dublin Society . The stadium, which can seat 18,500 spectators, is now primarily used as the home ground for the Leinster Rugby rugby union team . Besides'll find equestrian events , concerts and occasionally also football matches take place.

The stadium was originally built for equestrian events, particularly the Dublin Horse Show, which first took place there in 1868. The Royal Dublin Society acquired the site in 1879. The wooden grandstand was replaced in 2006 by a modern new building, which was roofed two years later. There are plans to increase the stadium's audience capacity to 23,000.

Soccer

From September 1990 to April 1996, the Shamrock Rovers used the RDS Arena as their home ground . The first international match took place here on February 19, 1992, when Ireland met Wales . During the U-16 European Football Championship in 1994 , the RDS Arena was the venue for two group games, a quarter-finals, the game for third place and the final. During the renovation of the Aviva Stadium , the FAI Cup finals were played here in 2007 and 2008 . The St Patrick's Athletic team played against Hertha BSC in the first round of the 2008/09 UEFA Cup , and against Steaua Bucharest in the 2009/10 UEFA Europa League .

Rugby union

The first rugby game at this stadium took place on October 15, 2005 when Leinster played rugby against the Cardiff Blues . Four more games followed in the 2005/06 season. In the following season, Leinster Rugby evaded due to renovation work on other venues. Since the 2007/08 season, the RDS Arena has been the official home ground of this team after a 20-year lease was signed. The capacity of the previously used Donnybrook Stadium was no longer sufficient. On May 29, 2010, the RDS hosted the final game of the Magners League 2009/10 , in which Leinster Rugby was defeated by the Ospreys with 12:17. Another narrow defeat against the Ospreys (30:31) was on May 27, 2012 in the final of the Pro12 2011/12 . On May 25, 2013, Leinster Rugby was finally able to celebrate the championship title in the RDS Arena when the Ulster Rugby team was beaten by 24:18. Eight days earlier, Leinster Rugby had won the final of the European Challenge Cup 2012/13 against Stade Français at 34:13 in his home stadium .

From 2008 to 2010, the RDS Arena hosted the Leinster Schools Senior Cup , on November 21, 2009 an international match between Ireland and Fiji .

Equestrian sport

The stadium was originally built to host equestrian events. The Dublin Horse Show has been held here every year since 1868. The world championships in show jumping also took place in 1982 in the RDS Arena.

Culture

The RDS Arena is often used as a venue for outdoor concerts in the summer months . It played here u. a. Bon Jovi (2011, 2019), Boyzone (1999 and 2008), Britney Spears (2004), Bruce Springsteen (2003, 2008, 2009, 2012), Elton John (1984, 2005), Guns N 'Roses (2006), Iron Maiden (2005), Korn (2002), Michael Jackson (1997), Paul McCartney (2010), P! Nk (2010), Prince (1992), Queen (1979), Radiohead (1997), Rod Stewart (2013), Simple Minds (1989), Take That (2006), Tina Turner (1990, 2000), U2 (1993) and Van Halen (1995, 1996).

In June 2012 the RDS Arena was the venue for the one-week Eucharistic World Congress .
