European Challenge Cup 2012/13

The European Challenge Cup 2013/14 was the 18th edition of the European Challenge Cup , the second-tier European cup competition in rugby union . For sponsorship reasons it was called the Amlin Challenge Cup . There were 23 teams involved - 20 in the group phase and an additional three in the knockout round, which were eliminated early in the Heineken Cup 2013/14 . The competition began on October 10, 2013 and the finals took place on May 23, 2014 at Cardiff Arms Park in Cardiff . The defending champion was the Irish team Leinster Rugby , the tournament was decided by the Northampton Saints from England.

Originally the final should have taken place in France. However, the Fédération Française de Rugby withdrew its application due to the uncertainty whether the Stade de France would be available. After a new tender by the organizer European Rugby Cup, Cardiff was finally awarded the contract.

mode

All teams from the English Aviva Premiership , the French Top 14 and the international Pro12 that did not qualify for the Heineken Cup took part in the European Challenge Cup. There were also the four best-placed teams from the Italian Campionato di Eccellenza and one representative each from Romania and Portugal. Instead of the Portuguese selection, the Spanish representative Olympus Madrid was originally intended, but withdrew from the competition in September 2013.

The 20 participants in the group stage were divided into five groups of four teams each. The betting order was based on the placement in the pan-European club ranking. Each team played a home and an away game against the three group opponents. In the group stage, the teams received:

  • four points for a win
  • two points for a tie
  • a bonus point for four or more attempts
  • a bonus point for a loss of seven or less points

The five group winners qualified for the quarter-finals, plus the third to fifth best runners-up from the knockout round of the Heineken Cup 2013/14 . The four teams that were most successful in the group stage had the right to play at home in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. In the event of a tie, the number of attempts (in this order), the difference in points from all games, the lower number of red and yellow cards and finally a coin toss are decided. Places 5 to 7 were automatically assigned to those who were relegated from the Heineken Cup.

draw

The teams that did not qualify for the Heineken Cup were divided into four pots with four teams each according to the European club ranking (in brackets the placement at the end of the previous season):
