Rugby Viadana is an Italian rugby union club from Viadana in the province of Mantua . He plays in the top Italian league Campionato di Eccellenza . The home games are played in the Stadio Luigi Zaffanella . Viadana has been champion once and cup winner six times.

history

The club was founded in 1970 by some former Parma players, initially as a division of the Vitellianense Cebogas sports club. Viadana started in Serie D, the lowest division. In 1981 he was promoted to Serie B, in 1987 to Serie A2. In 1989 Viadana was relegated again, but in 1993 managed to return to the A2 series. This was mainly thanks to Tana Umaga , the later New Zealand superstar, who played during a season in Italy at the beginning of his career.

In 1999, they were promoted to what was then the top division, Serie A. In 2000, Viadana won the Italian rugby cup for the first time and made it to the semi-finals of the playoffs. 2001 the team finished the season in third place, but failed again in the semifinals to Treviso .

In 2002, the championship was reorganized in such a way that the top ten teams - including Viadana - formed the new Super 10 league. In the same year Viadana finished the regular season in first place and beat Treviso in the playoff final. Viadana was the first master who did not come from a provincial capital. In 2003 the second cup victory followed and in 2004 Viadana was the first Italian team to reach the final in a European cup competition. In the fight for the European Shield , however, Viadana lost 19:25 against Montpellier . The club's last success so far is the 2017 cup victory.
