The Newcastle Falcons are an English rugby union club from Newcastle upon Tyne , which is represented in the highest league, the Aviva Premiership . The home games are played at Kingston Park Stadium.

history

In 1877, a group of ex- Durham School boarders formed the original Gosforth Rugby Club . However, this did not have its own playing fields and had to keep moving to new rental fields. A fundraiser brought in enough money in 1951 to be able to purchase the club's own property on North Road. A stadium was built on it by 1955. The club had a very successful time in the 1970s, winning the John Player Cup in 1976 and 1977. Over the decades, Gosforth provided numerous players for the English national team and the British and Irish Lions .

In 1990 the club moved from North Road to its current location and changed its name to Newcastle Gosforth . The businessman John Hall founded the Newcastle Sporting Club to bring together professional teams from various sports in Newcastle under one umbrella organization. First he took over Newcastle United (football), later Newcastle Eagles (basketball), Newcastle Vipers (ice hockey), and finally Newcastle Gosforth in 1996. The rugby club also changed its name to Newcastle Falcons and replaced the traditional club colors green and white with black and white.

In 1997 the team rose to the top division and the following year the Falcons became English champions. However, they have not been able to repeat this success to this day. However, they won the Powergen Cup twice ; In 2001 they defeated the Harlequins in the final , and in 2004 the Sale Sharks . In 2012 the Falcons had to relegate, and a year later they managed to rise again. In 2019 they were relegated again.
