Carl Hayman (born November 14, 1979 in Opunake , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand rugby union player on the right pillar position . He currently plays in the top 14 at the French club RC Toulon .

Career

In New Zealand, Hayman played for Otago at the provincial level, for the Highlanders in the Super 14 and for the All Blacks at the international level. He was the 1,000th All Black when he made his international debut against Samoa in 2001. Since then, Hayman has grown into an elite pillar in world rugby and was nominated as one of five nominees for New Zealand's 2006 Player of the Year. He also played for the New Zealand Māori in 2005 against Fiji in Suva and against the British and Irish Lions in Hamilton .

On April 19, 2007 it was announced that Carl Hayman has signed a three-year contract with the Guinness Premiership team Newcastle Falcons. With that he turned down an offer from the English master Sale Sharks . Commenting on the transfer, a club source said "Every top club in Europe wanted him but he decided to come to Newcastle and we are happy he made his decision that way".

It was seen by many as a strong sign for the Newcastle Falcons to strengthen their squad with a player who is "widely regarded as the most formidable player in the scrum." Currently, Carl Hayman is considered the best right-wing pillar in world rugby. At the Rugby World Cup in 2007 he showed his versatility as a striker, as he played as a second-row striker in the group game against Portugal .

It has been reported that with the contract, Carl Hayman was the highest paid rugby union player in the world. He is believed to make $ NZ 1 million - £ 330,000 - per year through 2010. This contract was funded in part by Northern Rock - the sponsor of the Falcons. Hayman made his debut with the Falcons on December 1, 2007 as a substitute in an EDF Energy Cup game against the London Wasps .

On the 2010/11 season, Hayman moved to France for RC Toulon .
