The Rugby Club Toulonnais (usually short RC Toulon ) is a rugby union club from the French city of Toulon in the Var department . He is represented in the top 14 French league and plays his home games at the Stade Mayol . So far, the RC Toulon has been French champion four times and the international Champions Cup three times .
history
The club was created on June 3, 1908 through the merger of Étoile Sportive Varoise and part of Stade Varois from the neighboring town of La Seyne . In 1909 the newly formed club was in the final of the second division, but lost to US Montauban . It took another 23 years for RC Toulon to reach the top of French rugby. 1931 Lyon OU was defeated in the championship finals and Toulon celebrated the first championship title. In 1934 the team won the prestigious Challenge Yves du Manoir (again in 1970).
The RC Toulon remained one of the best teams in the country and reached the final four times (1948, 1968, 1971 and 1985). But each of these games was lost. The final in 1968 was particularly close: Because of the May riots , the game had to be postponed by three weeks. At the end of regular time it was 6: 6, after extra time 9: 9. The FC Lourdes was declared a Master, while two trials had achieved and Toulon no. In addition, it was no longer possible to schedule a repetition so late as the French national team was about to leave for a tour of New Zealand and South Africa . In 1971 and 1985, the RC Toulon was only defeated in extra time.
In 1987 the RC Toulon was back in the final and won the championship title for the second time after defeating the Racing Club de France . The third title followed in 1992 when Biarritz Olympique was defeated. In the following years the association was no longer particularly successful and accumulated a mountain of debt of 10 million francs. In July 2000, the Ligue Nationale de Rugby was forced to relegate to the second-rate Pro D2 due to financial problems . It was not until five years later that it was able to rise again. But the 2005/06 season was not very successful; the RC Toulon won only three of 26 games and relegated again after only one season.
The new president Mourad Boudjellal invested a lot of money and signed numerous prominent players. He caused a sensation when he signed the former All-Blacks captain Tana Umaga as coach, who flew to Toulon immediately after the Air New Zealand Cup ended at the end of October 2006. The top goal of the club's management was promotion to the top 14 , which finally succeeded at the end of the 2007/08 season. In 2012, the team was back in the championship finals for the first time in 20 years, but lost it. In the 2012/13 season, the RC Toulon advanced to the final of the Heineken Cup and won it with 16:15 against ASM Clermont Auvergne . The 2013 championship final was lost again, this time against Castres Olympique .
In the 2013/14 season, the RC Toulon won both the French championship and the Heineken Cup, which the team was able to win again in the 2014/15 season after being renamed the European Rugby Champions Cup . No other team has so far achieved the title hat trick in the European "premier class".
