Sonny Bill Williams (born August 3, 1985 in Auckland , New Zealand ) is a New Zealand rugby player and boxer . He enjoyed great success in both rugby union and rugby league .
Career
Williams began his professional career in 2004 in rugby league for the CB Bulldogs in the Australian National Rugby League . He also played for the New Zealand national rugby league team since 2004 . He then switched to rugby union and played for RC Toulon in the French top 14 between 2008 and 2010 . As early as 2009 he started fighting as a professional heavyweight boxer . Of his seven fights so far, he has won all of them without exception, three of them by knockout .
In 2010 Williams returned to his native New Zealand and initially played for Canterbury RFU in the ITM Cup . The following year he moved to the Crusaders in super rugby and was also world champion in his own country with the New Zealand national rugby union team , for which he had been nominated for the first time the year before. Shortly afterwards he came under contract with the Chiefs , also in super rugby, and then played for the Panasonic Wild Knights in the Japanese Top League until 2013 .
In the same year Williams briefly returned to the rugby league and played for the Sydney Roosters in the National Rugby League until 2014 . In the same year he was accepted into the team at Counties Manukau RU and played again in the ITM Cup. In 2015 he became world champion for the second time in England with the New Zealand national rugby union team.
Sonny Bill Williams participated in the 2016 Olympic Games . In the first game against Japan he suffered an injury to his Achilles tendon .
His father is from Samoa and his mother from New Zealand. He converted to Islam in 2008. His sister Niall Williams is a New Zealand sevens national rugby player .
