The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs are an Australian rugby league club from Sydney . The club, founded in 1934, is one of the most successful teams in the National Rugby League with eight championship titles and a total of 18 appearances in the Grand Final . The Bulldogs competing in blue and white jerseys play their home games either in the ANZ Stadium or in the Belmore Sports Ground .
history
The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs were inducted into the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL) shortly after their formation and played their first season in the elite league in 1935. Already in 1938 they won their first title with a 19: 6 final win against the Sydney Roosters . The second championship followed in 1942, but the following year the Bulldogs , which suffered personnel losses due to the Second World War , fell into the cellar and "won" the Wooden spoon twice in a row . After many years without any notable success, Canterbury-Bankstown succeeded in 1967 through a sensational success against series champion St. George Dragons again in the Grand Final , but where they were defeated by the South Sydney Rabbitohs . After further vice championships in 1974 and 1979, the Bulldogs experienced the most successful era in their club history in the 1980s. The team, also known as "The Entertainers" at the time because of their entertaining game, ended the 38-year-long dry spell without a championship title with an 18: 4 win in the Grand Final against the Sydney Roosters. In 1984, 1985 and 1988 further titles were won. In 1995 the Bulldogs won their seventh championship in the Australian Rugby League (ARL) competition, but decided in the course of the Super League War for the competitive league founded by Rupert Murdoch . After the merger of the leagues into the National Rugby League , the team had to struggle with some difficulties. In 2002 all points were deducted for violating the salary cap and in 2004 several Bulldogs players were accused of rape . Despite this turbulence succeeded in the same year, again against the Roosters , the win of the eighth championship. In 2014 they lost to the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the Grand Final with 6:30 and thus became runner-up for the tenth time.
Fans
The Bulldogs are among the most popular clubs in the Australian Rugby League and have one of the highest attendance averages in the NRL. The multiculturalism in Sydney's southwest, home of the Bulldogs , is also reflected in the fan scene. Especially the population of Greek and Lebanese descent is said to have a strong affinity for the club.
