history

When the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL) accepted new teams for the first time in 20 years in 1967, the Sharks from southern Sydney , founded four years earlier, made it into the elite class of the Australian Rugby League together with the Penrith Panthers . In the first three seasons the team "won" the wooden spoon twice . 1973 Cronulla-Sutherland moved into the Grand Final for the first time , but where they were inferior to the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles with 7:10. Five years later the Sharks got the chance to take revenge against the Sea Eagles in their second Grand Final , but lost, after an 11:11 draw in the first edition, in the replay with 0:16. After serious financial problems in the early 1980s, the Sharks surprisingly found themselves at the top of the table at the end of the regular season in 1988 and thus won their first minor premiership , but missed the Grand Final .

Between 1995 and 2001, the club experienced its most successful era to date under successful coach John Lang and - with the exception of 1998 - reached at least the semi-finals every year. In 1997, Cronulla-Sutherland joined the newly founded league of Rupert Murdoch as part of the Super League War and played the first and only Grand Final of the Super League against the Brisbane Broncos , which was lost 8:26. In 1999 the Sharks celebrated their last notable success for a long time with their first minor premiership in the NRL. After the end of the John Lang era, there was a sporting decline that culminated in the "win" of the third wooden spoon in the 2014 season. In 2015, the advance into the semi-final was unexpectedly successful , but where the North Queensland Cowboys clearly lost. In 2016, Cronulla-Sutherland surprised with third place in the regular season and the subsequent entry into the Grand Final, where the favored Melbourne Storm were defeated 14:12. Thus, the Sharks won the first championship in the club's history just two years after their last wooden spoon.

Rivalries

The most intense rivalry is with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles , who were defeated in two highly competitive Grand Finals in the 1970s. The meeting of the two teams is known in Australia as the "Battle of the Beaches". In addition, due to their geographical proximity , the Sharks have a strong rivalry with the St. George Illawarra Dragons .
