The North Sydney Bears are an Australian rugby league club from Sydney . Between 1908 and 1999 they were in Australia's top division, today's National Rugby League , active. The Bears are now playing as the reserve team for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the second-rate New South Wales Cup . The club has been home to the 20,000-seat North Sydney Oval for over a century .

history

The North Sydney Bears were one of the founding members of the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL) in 1908 , but initially struggled with very low attendance and were almost expelled from the league. After the First World War , however, the team showed itself to be greatly improved and was able to win the first and only championship titles in the club's history in 1921 and 1922 . 1943 was the last to make it into the Grand Final, in which the Newtown Jets were defeated.

After the Second World War , the club was never able to build on previous successes, even if they occasionally moved into the play-offs and at least celebrated respectable successes there. The bankrupt North Sydney Bears merged in 2000 with the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles to form the Northern Eagles . Since the end of this short-lived project, the Bears have only been active as a reserve team for the South Sydney Rabbitohs in the New South Wales Cup.
