The Parramatta Eels are an Australian rugby league club from Sydney . Founded in 1946, the Eels were the dominant team in Australia in the first half of the 1980s . The primary club colors of the "Eels" are blue and yellow, they play their home games in the Parramatta Stadium or alternatively in the ANZ Stadium .
history
As early as the 1930s, the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL) planned to take on a club from the Parramatta City district , but this was delayed by the outbreak of World War II . In 1947 the newly founded Eels finally started playing in Australia's top league. However, the first few years were marked by complete failure. In the ten seasons between 1952 and 1961 Parramatta finished the season eight times as bottom of the table and thus "won" tons of wooden spoons . It wasn't until 1962 that the team was able to qualify for the play-offs for the first time . In 1976 the Eels reached their first Grand Final , which was unfortunately lost to the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles . A year later they lost in the second Grand Final against the St. George Dragons only in the replay. With the first championship in 1981 through a final victory against the Newtown Jets , Parramatta's golden age began . Under the leadership of star players such as Ray Price, Steve Ella and Peter Sterling, further titles were won in 1982, 1983 and 1986, as well as the Minor Premiership in 1982 and the runner-up in 1984. In 1987, however, this era ended and the Eels could not move into the play-offs for nine years . It wasn't until 2001 that Parramatta took part in a Grand Final again after a strong season and winning the Minor Premiership , but lost to the Newcastle Knights . In 2009 they lost to Melbourne Storm , which was later deprived of this title, the last Grand Final so far . Further wooden spoons followed in 2012 and 2013 .
