The South Sydney Rabbitohs are an Australian rugby league club based in Sydney . With 21 championship titles in the top national league, today's National Rugby League , South Sydney is the most successful team in Australia . The primary club colors of the "rabbits" are red and green, the secondary black and white. The Rabbitohs play their home games at ANZ Stadium , the largest arena in Sydney.
history
The club were one of the founding members of the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL) in 1908 and became their first title holder with a 14:12 final win over the Sydney Roosters . A year later they defended the championship under the leadership of player-coach Arthur Hennessy, who is considered the "founding father" of the club. After further titles in 1914 and 1918, the Rabbitohs lived through the greatest era in their club history in the 1920s and early 1930s. From 1925 to 1932 South Sydney won seven out of eight possible championships, only in 1930 you had to let the Western Suburbs Magpies go first. In view of the outstanding performance, the Rabbitohs were given the nickname "The Pride of the League", which is still used today. In the 1940s, however, the record champions experienced a sporting decline and did not reach a Grand Final for ten years . In the 1945 season you could only win a single game, in 1946 none at all.
In 1947, with the engagement of Clive Churchill , who would become the greatest club legend of all time, the foundation stone was laid for a second "golden era". In 1950, a 21:15 against the Western Suburbs was the first championship title in 18 years. 1951, 1953, 1954 and 1955 achieved further successes in the Grand Final . In 1956, however, the great days of the St. George Dragons began , and the Rabbitohs had to wait until 1967 for the next title. Clive Churchill was now a coach in South Sydney and thus shaped the third and, for the time being, last great epoch of the club. After the successes in the Grand Final in 1968 and 1970, both times against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles , winning the title in 1971 against the St. George Dragons was the beginning of an impossible dry spell. The team from Sydney's south got into financial trouble shortly afterwards and lost its key performers.
After a sporty downturn, the Rabbitohs were able to stabilize again in the 1980s, but without being able to build on the great successes of past days. In 1989 they won the first minor premiership since 1970 as the best team in the regular season , but missed the Grand Final . In the 1990s the financial and sporting problems became acute again. Probably the greatest crisis in the club's history came in 1999 when the record champions were excluded from the National Rugby League as a result of the reduction in the number of participating teams . It was only after a series of legal proceedings and massive fan protests that South Sydney was re-accepted into the league in 2002.
In 2006 Hollywood star Russell Crowe bought the club and contributed to its financial consolidation. Up-and-coming talents like Greg Inglis and Sam Burgess could be attracted to the south of Sydney, which made it possible to offer a competitive team again in the early 2010s. In 2014, a 30: 6 win in the Grand Final against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs won the first championship title in 43 years. In 2015, despite the departure of Sam Burgess, the team won the World Club Challenge and the NRL Auckland Nines for the first time . This encouraged the fans of the Rabbitohs in their hope for a new "golden era". The following season ended, however, with a disappointing seventh place in the table and an elimination in the first round of the finals against the Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks . In 2016 there was even another crash to 12th place, which meant that for the first time since 2011, the team missed the finals.
Fans
The Rabbitohs are one of the most popular clubs in the Australian rugby league . Of all Sydney-based NRL clubs, they have the highest membership and the highest average attendance. The club is said to have a particularly strong bond with the indigenous population of Australia . The most intense rivalry is with the Sydney Roosters , the last remaining founding member of the NSWRFL alongside the Rabbitohs .
