The Canberra Raiders are an Australian rugby league club from Canberra . The team from Australia's capital has played in the highest national league, today's National Rugby League, since 1982 . The primary club colors are light green and white, the secondary blue and yellow. The Raiders play their home games in the 25,000-seat Canberra Stadium .

history

In the early 1980s, the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL), the predecessor organization of today's NRL, tried to expand beyond the boundaries of its hometown of Sydney and to integrate teams from other regions of Australia into their game operations. For this purpose, the Raiders were launched on March 30, 1981 in Canberra , which joined the NSWRFL in 1982. After a few teething problems and the “win” of the Wooden spoon in their first season , a real top team formed from the middle of the decade around the star player Mal Meninga from Queensland . In 1987, the Raiders made it into the play-offs as the first team based outside of Sydney and immediately marched through to the Grand Final . There they were defeated by the favorite Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles with 8:18. 1989 succeeded again in the Grand Final , where Canberra defeated the Balmain Tigers 19:14 in a thrilling game and thus won the Winfield Cup , the championship trophy of the NSWRFL, as the first club outside of Sydney . A year later, the Raiders repeated their triumph with an 18:14 against the Penrith Panthers . In 1991 the Panthers took revenge in a new edition of the final, which Canberra had reached four Grand Finals in five years. After violating the salary cap , however , the raiders got increasingly into financial and sporting difficulties. In 1994, a victory against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs won the third championship title, which should remain the last to this day. In the course of the Super League War , which resulted in a temporary split in the Australian Rugby League, the Raiders joined the Super League founded by Rupert Murdoch in 1997 . However, this split lasted only one year, from 1998 the Raiders played in the National Rugby League . Since the 2000s, the Raiders could no longer build on their previous successes and reached the play-offs only very irregularly , often they found themselves in the lower regions of the table. In the 2014 season Canberra landed on the penultimate place in the table and just barely missed the second wooden spoon in the club's history. In 2016, the Raiders played a surprisingly strong season, reaching second place in the regular season and only eliminated in the preliminary final (the penultimate round) against the Melbourne Storm .
