The St. George Illawarra Dragons are a professional rugby league team from Australia . They represent the regions of St. George and Illawarra . The Saints currently play in the popular Australian National Rugby League (NRL), founded in 1998 . The club emerged from a joint venture between the St. George Dragons and the Illawarra Steelers and is the only remaining cross-city club in the NRL. The club colors are red and white.

history

As a result of the Super League War in the mid-1990s, the Illawarra Steelers struggled financially and it seemed unlikely that the club could survive the next season. The St. George Dragons put forward a proposal for a merger and funding in which the clubs renamed St. George Illawarra Dragons would play in both Kogarah and Wollongong. Essentially, St George would provide the money while Illawarra would provide a wider junior and fan base. With the NRL's intention to reduce the number of teams from 20 to 14, with a financial incentive of over $ 4 million and a loosening of the salary cap on a merger, the Dragons and Steelers secured their survival by forming the first merger of the League on September 23, 1998.

In its first season, the newly formed club marched through to the Grand Final , where they were just under the Melbourne Storm . In the following seasons, the team found itself more in the middle of the table and did not always reach the finals . In 2009, the Saints won their first minor premiership since the merger, but failed in the semi-final at the Brisbane Broncos . A year later, after another minor premiership , the big hit finally succeeded and with a 32: 8 win against the Sydney Roosters, the cross-city club won their first title . In 2015 they reached the finals again after a four-year dry spell , but failed in the first round due to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs .
