Illawarra
Illawarra is a region in the Australian state of New South Wales . The coastal region lies south of Sydney and borders on the Shoalhaven region south of it . It includes the cities of Wollongong and Shellharbour and the municipality of Kiama .
The word Illawarra probably means "high place near the sea" in the local indigenous language .
The main traditional livelihoods of the area are agriculture , coal mining and steel making . Australia's largest steel mill, BlueScope Steel, is located in Port Kembla . The area, especially around Port Kembla, and Wollongong, was known for many industrial jobs, but the service industry has been gaining in importance since 1990.

The Illawarra region is connected to Sydney by several passes and the Southern Freeway, as well as an electrified railway line. Furthermore, Illawarra is connected to the Illawarra Highway and Picton Road in the west and to the Princes Highway in the south . There is a regional airport in Albion Park.

Illawarra is administered by the four local councils of Wollongong City , Shellharbour City , Kiama Municipality and partially Shoalhaven City . Wollongong is the northernmost municipality, it stretches from Helensburgh to Lake Illawarra , with the northernmost coastal town Stanwell Park and the southernmost suburbs Windang, Yallah and Haywards Bay. Shellharbour is located south of Wollongong and extends in the north from the south coast of Lake Illawarra to the Minnamurra River in the south. The Kiama Municipality borders the Minnamurra River in the north and includes all areas up to about 4 km south of Gerroa . The Shoalhaven City Council covers the south adjoining areas from Illawarra to the Ulladulla region .

In 2004 the Illawarra region had 409,734 inhabitants.
Sports
The Illawarra Steelers played in the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership , later in the National Rugby League , and currently form half of the St. George Illawarra Dragons joint venture . There are many sports facilities in Illawarra and some famous rugby stars like Trent Barrett are from there.
