Coordinates: 34 ° 35 ′ S , 150 ° 48 ′ E The City of Shellharbour is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . The area is 147.4 km² and has about 68,500 inhabitants.
Shellharbour is located on the Pacific coast of the state in the Illawarra region about 100 km south of the metropolis of Sydney and 220 km northeast of the Australian capital Canberra . The area includes 27 hamlets and towns: Albion Park, Albion Park Rail, Balarang, Barrack Heights, Barrack Point, Bass Point, Blackbutt, Calderwood, Croom, Dunmore, Flinders, Lake Illawarra, Lake Illawarra South, Lake South, North Macquarie, Macquarie Pass, Mount Terry, Mount Warrigal, Oak Flats, Oak Heights, Shell Cove, Shellharbour, Shellharbour Square, Tongarra, Tullimbar, Warilla and Yellow Rock. The seat of the City Council is located in the Shellharbour district in the northeast of the LGA.

Shellharbour City Council has 13 members who are elected by LGA residents. Two members each come from the six wards A to F, the chairman and mayor is also elected by all residents of the LGA. The six electoral districts are determined independently of the localities.
