The New South Wales Rugby League Premiership (also known as the New South Wales Rugby Football League) was the first rugby league competition in Australia and the forerunner of the National Rugby League .

history

The competition started in 1908 with eight teams from Sydney . These eight teams are called "foundation clubs". Only two of them are playing in the NRL today, the Sydney Roosters and the South Sydney Rabbitohs .

The format of the competition changed relatively often at the beginning, but since 1926 all championships have been decided by a regular season with subsequent playoffs and grand finals, with the exception of the 1937 season, which had to be reduced to a regular season due to a tour of the kangaroos .

Between 1956 and 1966 the St. George Dragons won eleven championship titles in a row, which is an unmatched world record in rugby to this day .

1982 took part with the Illawarra Steelers ( Wollongong ) and the Canberra Raiders for the first time since 1909 teams outside of Sydney .

In 1988, teams from Queensland participated for the first time with the Brisbane Broncos and the Gold Coast Tweed Giants . In the same year, a franchise was also relocated to Newcastle with the Newcastle Knights .

1995 were with the South Queensland Crushers , the North Queensland Cowboys , the Western Reds and the Auckland Warriors added other teams from other parts of Australia. The number of teams was now 20, the highest in the history of the competition. Due to the fact that numerous teams were now participating outside of New South Wales , the organization of the competition was transferred from the New South Wales Rugby League to the Australian Rugby League . Over the next few years, the New South Wales Rugby Football League became the National Rugby League through the Super League War and its aftermath .

• In 1909, Balmain refused to play in the final because it was supposed to be a curtain-raiser before a game between the Kangaroos and the Wallabies .
• In 1910, the rule was that if there was a tie in the final, the team that had more points in the regular season wins.
