The Sydney Roosters are an Australian rugby league club founded in 1908 . The club plays its games at the 46,000-seat Sydney Cricket Ground . The club colors are red, white and blue.

Surname

The club was called Eastern Suburbs RLFC when it was founded in 1908 , as it has its roots in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. After the introduction of the rooster emblem, it was renamed Eastern Suburbs Roosters in 1967 . In 1995 the name was changed to Sydney City Roosters , which was eventually simplified to Sydney Roosters in 2000 . The official name has been Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club , or ESDRLFC for short, since it was founded in 1908 .

history

The club was founded on January 24, 1908 as Eastern Suburbs District Rugby League Football Club, as it had been decided to include a team from the district in the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership (NSWRL) founded a year earlier . The Eastern Suburbs played their first game on April 20, 1908, when they beat the Newtown Jets 32-16. In 1913, the team from East Sydney was the first team to win a title hat-trick in the NSWRL. However, they did not win a single championship in the nine following seasons. In 1935, the Eastern Suburbs lost only one game in the entire season and scored the highest victory in club history when they beat the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs with 87-7 (106-8 according to today's point system). In 1936 and 1937 the team remained unbeaten for two complete seasons, which is an unmatched record to this day.

1945 was the last championship for the time being, in the following seven seasons, the Eastern Suburbs did not reach the play-offs once . Her best result in the following years was reaching the Grand Finals in 1960, losing to the St. George Dragons 6-31. The 1966 season marked a new low when the Eastern Suburbs were without a win for a full season for the first time in the club's history. In addition, this was the third time after 1963 and 1965 that they "won" the Wooden spoon . Overall, the formerly glorious team won only 8 out of 72 games between 1963 and 1966.

It was not until 1967 that the club experienced a rebirth, when Jack Gibson was hired as a coach and a new emblem was introduced on the jerseys, the rooster . Between 1972 and 1981, the Roosters won four minor premierships and entered the Grand Final four times , winning it in 1974 and 1975. From 1984 onwards, a sporting decline began that lasted for about a decade. It was only during the Super League War that the roosters were able to raise the money for new stars and slowly free themselves from the sporting low. In the 2002 Grand Final , a 30-8 against the New Zealand Warriors achieved the first title win in 27 years. In 2004, 2010 and 2013 there were further Grand Finals , in the latter one remained victorious against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles . The eighteenth minor premiership took place in 2014 , making the Roosters the sole record holder in this regard. In 2015 they failed after the third Minor Premiership in a row in the Preliminary Final at the Brisbane Broncos . The following year, however, there was a massive slump after the departure of some top performers, and the Roosters ended up on the penultimate place in the table after a weak season. The low was short-lived: In 2017 they finished second in the regular season and only failed surprisingly in the preliminary final against the North Queensland Cowboys .

Rivalries

The oldest of all the NRL rivalries is that between the Sydney Roosters and the South Sydney Rabbitohs . These are the last two teams that have existed since 1908, i.e. since the NSWRL was founded. In addition, the geographical proximity favors competition. They also have rivalries with other Sydney clubs such as the St. George Illawarra Dragons , the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs and the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles .
