The NSWRL 1908 was the first season of the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership , the first Australian rugby league championship. Eight teams took part in the first season, seven of which were from Sydney . These are called "foundation clubs". In the second round, a ninth team was added, but they dropped out at the end of the season and in 1909 no longer took part in the NSWRL. First place after the end of the regular season went to the South Sydney Rabbitohs , who won the final 14:12 against the Eastern Suburbs .

Origin and Success

In 1906, the number of viewers at rugby league games rose sharply. The reason for this was Dally Messenger , a very talented gamer. In 1907 he agreed to take part in a professional competition organized by the New South Wales Rugby Football League . After all, it was his popularity that ensured that the new competition would be a long-term success.

The season began on April 20, 1908, with two games, one at Wentworth Park and one at Birchgrove Oval . It was supposed to be a financial disaster as there were hardly any stars apart from Dally Messenger. In addition, there were problems with the referees and the fact that the press hardly reported about the new competition. Many of the players had also moved from rugby union to rugby league , which meant that they were not allowed to enter the Sydney Cricket Ground , which was then owned by the New South Wales Rugby Union .
