The NSWRL 1944 was the 37th season of the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership , the first Australian rugby league championship. The first place in the table after the end of the regular season occupied the Newtown Jets . They lost both the final and the grand final against the Balmain Tigers , which won the NSWRL for the eighth time.

    Playoffs

    The playoff system provided the "Right of Challenge" for the final in 1944. This stated that, should the lower ranked team win, the higher ranked team had the right to request a replay to take place one week later.
