The NSWRL 1909 was the second season of the New South Wales Rugby League Premiership , the first Australian rugby league championship. In the Grand Final between the South Sydney Rabbitohs and the Balmain Tigers , the Tigers refused to play, as the game was supposed to take place as a curtain raiser before a game between the Kangaroos and the Wallabies . As a result, the Rabbitohs automatically became champions and took their second title.

Grand Final
Allegedly, South Sydney and Balmain originally decided not to appear for the Grand Final, forcing the New South Wales Rugby League to repeat the Grand Final. South Sydney, however, appeared without Balmain noticing, and automatically won his second title. Demands from Balmain to replay the game have been dismissed by the New South Wales Rugby League. These events led to a rivalry between the two clubs that lasted for years.
