The Newcastle Knights are an Australian rugby league club from Newcastle , New South Wales . Since it was founded in 1988, the team has played in the highest national league, today's National Rugby League . The club colors are blue and red, the Knights play their home games in the 33,000-seat Hunter Stadium .
history
As early as 1982 there were concrete plans to include a team from Newcastle in the New South Wales Rugby Football League (NSWRFL), but ultimately the vacant place fell to the Canberra Raiders . In 1988 the newly founded Knights began playing in Australia's elite league. Right from the start, the “knights” enjoyed great popularity and quickly celebrated considerable success. The team moved into the play-offs for the first time in 1990, and in 1992 they made their first jump into the top 4. In 1993, Andrew Johns joined the team, who shaped the most successful era in the club's history and became one of the best rugby league players of all time should rise. During the Super League War , in which the Australian Rugby League (ARL) remained loyal, the Knights achieved their first championship title in 1997 with a 22:16 in the Grand Final against the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles . Until 2003, the Knights were always represented in the play-offs and were among the top teams in the National Rugby League . In 2001, the second victory in the second Grand Final came with a 30:24 over the favored Parramatta Eels . After a misery of injuries in 2004, a sporting decline followed, which a year later even resulted in the first "win" of the Wooden spoon . After Andrew Johns' retirement in 2007, there were no notable successes for a long time, only in 2013 the jump into the top 4 succeeded again. In the preliminary final, however, the Knights were clearly defeated by the eventual master Sydney Roosters . In 2015, 2016 and 2017, further wooden spoons followed after weak seasons, with only one of 24 games being won in 2016.
