The New Zealand Warriors are a New Zealand rugby league club from Auckland . Founded in 1995 as the Auckland Warriors , the team is the only non-Australian club in the National Rugby League (NRL). The club colors are black, white and red. The Warriors play their home games in the 30,000-seat Mount Smart Stadium .
history
Auckland had been the center of rugby league in New Zealand since the early 20th century , while rugby union was far more popular in the rest of the country . When the Australian Rugby League (ARL) expanded to New Zealand in 1995, starting a team in New Zealand's largest metropolis was the most obvious option. In their first few years, the Warriors found themselves almost consistently in the lower half of the table. In 1997 they joined the Super League for one season , but had little success there either. It was not until the 2001 season that the team moved into the play-offs for the first time as eighth of the regular season , but failed in the first round at the Parramatta Eels . In 2002, the Warriors finished the season as first in the table and thus won the Minor Premiership for the first time . Then they moved into the Grand Final of the NRL as the first non-Australian team , but lost to the Sydney Roosters . Only two years later, however, the New Zealanders played the worst season in the club's history and barely missed the wooden spoon . A permanent establishment as a top team was therefore not successful. In 2011, driven by the new superstar Shaun Johnson , the second entry into the Grand Final took place . There they lost to the favorite Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles with 10:24. Since then, the Warriors have not been able to survive the regular season. However, the great successes of the youth team in recent years let the New Zealanders look to the future with hope.
