The Chiefs (German chiefs ; formerly called Waikato Chiefs ) are a rugby union team from the New Zealand city of Hamilton . The team plays in the international super rugby league. It represents the regional associations Counties Manukau RU , Waikato RU , Thames Valley RFU , King Country RFU and Bay of Plenty RU , whose catchment area includes the southern part of the Auckland metropolitan area and the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions on the North Island . The home games are played at Waikato Stadium . Team colors are black, yellow and red.
history
At the beginning, the catchment area of the franchise was composed differently. The NZRFU feared that the Auckland Blues could dominate their squad too much due to the large number of national players. The Chiefs therefore initially represented the regional associations Northland RFU and North Harbor RU .
At the end of the 1990s, the number of national players in the Blues fell, so that in 1999 the regional associations represented were swapped. The Chiefs gave Northland and North Harbor to the Blues in return for Counties of Manukau and Thames Valley. This resulted in a geographically more compact catchment area.
Since the creation of the Super 14 league in 1996 (until 2005 Super 12), the Chiefs have proven to be New Zealand's least successful team. Until 2004, they were the only New Zealand team that never made it to the semi-finals. At that time they lost 37:20 to the Brumbies from Canberra . In 2009 they made it to the finals for the first time, but the Chiefs clearly defeated the Bulls with 61:17. In 2012 the Chiefs made it to the final again and won the title for the first time with a 37-6 victory over the Sharks . They repeated this success in the 2013 season, the Chiefs beat the Brumbies in the final with 27:22.
