The Northland Rugby Union (NRFU) is the rugby union -Provinzverband the region Northland on the North Island of New Zealand . The association's selection team in the national championship Air New Zealand Cup is called Northland Taniwha and plays its home games at Okara Park in Whangarei .
The association was founded in 1920 as the North Auckland Rugby Union . It consists of 54 clubs which, due to the size of the region, belong to one of seven sub-associations. Northland has owned the Ranfurly Shield four times to date , in 1950, 1960, 1971 and 1978.
Northland players are eligible to play in the international super rugby league and are called up by the Blues (1995-1998 by the Chiefs ).
