The Manawatu Rugby Union (MRU) is the rugby union provincial association of the Manawatu District on the North Island of New Zealand . The association's selection team in the national championship ITM Cup is called Turbos and plays its home games at the Arena Manawatu in Palmerston North .
Manawatu has won the New Zealand Championship, the former National Provincial Championship , once (1980). In addition, the team came second twice (1976, 1981). From 1976 to 1978 she was owned by the Ranfurly Shield . The MRU merged with Hawke's Bay Rugby Union in 1997 . The new association Central Vikings Rugby Union existed for only one year and separated again.
Manawatu players are eligible to play in the international super rugby league and are called up by the Hurricanes .
