The Hurricanes (formerly Wellington Hurricanes ) are a rugby union team from the New Zealand capital Wellington . The team plays in the international Super 14 league. She represents the regional associations East Coast RFU , Poverty Bay RFU , Hawke's Bay RU , Horowhenua-Kapiti RFU , Manawatu RU , Taranaki RFU , Wairarapa Bush RFU , Wanganui RFU and Wellington RFU . The catchment area of the franchise thus covers the southern part of the North Island .
Home games are played at Westpac Stadium (until 1998 at Athletic Park ). The team colors are yellow and black. The mascot is called Captain Hurricane . Occasionally home games are played in other cities, mostly in New Plymouth at Yarrow Stadium .
The most successful season was 2016 when the Hurricanes won the championship for the first time.
