John Schwalger (born September 28, 1983 in Apia , Samoa ) is a New Zealand rugby union player on the pillar position .

His parents moved to New Zealand from Apia after he was born. Schwalger began his career with the New Zealand Secondary Schools team before joining the New Zealand U-21 team in 2004. That year he also won the U-21 World Cup. In 2005 he was a member of the Hurricanes' expanded training group for the Super 12 (now Super 14). He made his debut for Wellington in 2005 against the touring British and Irish Lions and played for them in the following National Provincial Championship season (NPC, since then renamed the Air New Zealand Cup).

Schwalger was appointed to the Hurricanes squad in the 2006 Super 14 season and took his chance by forcing himself a place as a regular player with his good performances. As a result of his good form, he was appointed to the team of the Junior All Blacks and won the IRB Pacific 5 Nations with her . After another successful Air New Zealand Cup season - in which he played on both sides of the scrum, he was called back to the Hurricanes in the Super 14 in 2007.

After the Super 14 season in 2007 he was appointed to the squad of the New Zealand national team (All Blacks) for the Tri Nations 2007 and was one of the team's two debutants with Brendon Leonard . His nomination was the biggest surprise in the selection, as he was preferred to the proven pillars Clarke Dermody and John Afoa . He did not make it into the 2007 Rugby World Cup squad, however , as the previously long-injured Greg Somerville returned to the squad.
