Ioane Fitu "John" Afoa (born October 16, 1983 , Auckland ) is a New Zealand national rugby union player . Its position is that of the pillar . He plays for Bristol Rugby in the English Premiership .

Afoa was a student at Auckland's St. Kentergin's College, where he began to play rugby with the also today's All Black Joe Rokocoko .

International career

Afoa has played for a number of New Zealand youth national teams. In 1999 he made his debut with the U-16 national team, New Zealand's youngest rugby team. In 2000 and 2001 he played on the New Zealand Schools' senior team.

Afoa went through all youth selections and played for the U-19s in 2002 and 2003. In 2003 Afoa was also appointed to the squad of the U-21 national team that participated in the Rugby Junior World Cup. The New Zealanders won the tournament and Afoa was one of four "Kiwis" chosen by the International Rugby Board to join the tournament.

In 2005 Afoa was appointed to the All Blacks squad for the Tri Nations . Despite this appointment, he did not play a single game in the tournament and did not play his first international game until the end of the year. He became the 1062nd All Black in November when he started against Ireland at Lansdowne Road .

Afoa left New Zealand in 2011 and moved to Northern Ireland to join Ulster Rugby .
