The Gloucester Rugby Football Club (abbreviated to Gloucester Rugby ) is a rugby union -Verein from the English town of Gloucester , in the Aviva Premiership play, the top English league. The home games are played at Kingsholm Stadium .
history
The founding meeting of the association took place on September 13, 1873 in the Spread Eagle Hotel . In 1891 the land that is now Kingsholm Stadium was purchased for £ 4,000. The Rugby Football Union (RFU) suspended Gloucester for a short time because the club had violated the amateur rules by signing players. The club responded with an even stricter interpretation of amateur status and was resumed. However, when numerous clubs founded their own association in 1895 (the later Rugby Football League ), some Gloucester players moved to the north of England, where they were far more open to professional athletes.
Gloucester had the best season of the amateur age in 1920/21, when the club won 23 home games. The following season, however, ended with a negative record: 14 players were sent off for brawls, seven for arguments with the referee, six for swear words and one for unfair play. This was also the reason why the Leicester Tigers canceled their game against Gloucester.
In 1972 Gloucester won the first ever English cup competition, the John Player Cup . The club was able to repeat this success in 1978 and 1982. Since the introduction of regular league operations in 1987, the Gloucester RFC has been represented in the top division. Even in the 1990s, the club held on to its traditional amateur status, which is why it was initially without a significant sponsor when the league was finally professionalized. In 2003 the club won the trophy for the fourth time, in 2002, 2003 and 2007 it lost the play-off final and was second in each case. In 2006 Gloucester won the European Challenge Cup ; it was London Irish defeated in the finals with just under 36:34. In the 2008/2009 season, the club moved back to the final of the EDF Energy Cup, but lost to the Welsh team of Cardiff Blues .
