Gareth Cooper (born May 7, 1979 in Bridgend ) is a Welsh rugby union player who is used on the position of the scrum half . He is active for the Welsh national team and the Cardiff Blues .

Cooper began his career at Pencoed RFC before moving to Bath Rugby in the Guinness Premiership in 1999 . With the restructuring of the club system in Wales, he returned to his home country and played for the Celtic Warriors . After only one season, this team was dissolved, however, so he moved to the Newport Gwent Dragons . After the 2007 World Cup , he replaced Peter Richards at Gloucester after he had retired from his career.

Cooper made his national team debut against Italy in 2001 . At the 2003 World Cup , he was the first choice in the scrum half position. However, when the Welsh won the Grand Slam at the Six Nations in 2005 , Dwayne Peel was preferred to him. It was the same with the British and Irish Lions tour that same year. He only started an official game against Argentina . After two seasons in England, he moved back to Wales for the Cardiff Blues for the 2009/10 season .

Cooper has a son named Louis.
