Bridgend ( Welsh : Pen-y-Bont ar Ogwr ) is a medium-sized town with 49,404 inhabitants on the south coast of Wales .

The city is the administrative seat of the homonymous community Bridgend County Borough with 144,300 inhabitants. In addition to the city of Bridgend, the municipality also includes the small towns of Maesteg and Porthcawl , each with around 20,000 inhabitants, and more than a dozen villages.

In 1974 the District Ogwr was formed within the then newly formed administrative county of West Glamorgan . As part of the introduction of one-tier local government in Wales, the Principal Area Bridgend with the status of a County Borough was formed from most of the District Ogwr on April 1, 1996 . As part of the one-tier local government established with the administrative reform, all administrative tasks are handled by the Bridgend Borough Council .

National awareness

Bridgend gained nationwide notoriety because Paul Potts had worked as a seller of mobile phones in the city until he in 2007 in the British talent show Britain's Got Talent as a tenor discovered and became internationally famous. The band " Bullet for My Valentine " also comes from there.

Bridgend suffered an unusually high number of suicides in 2007, mostly committed by young people. From February 2007 to February 2008, 17 young people committed suicide.
