Neath Port Talbot ( Welsh : Castell-nedd Port Talbot ) is a Principal Area with the status of a County Borough in South Wales . The county borough was created on April 1, 1996 from the districts of Neath , Port Talbot and parts of Lliw Valley . The administrative centers are the towns of Neath and Port Talbot. Neath Port Talbot is in Preserved County West Glamorgan .

Neath Port Talbot stretches from Swansea Bay to the Glamorgan Highlands, the highest point being around 600 m at Craig Y LLyn near Glynneath . As part of the South Wales Valleys , the hill country is cut by the valleys of the River Afan , River Neath , River Dulais and River Tawe , all of which flow into Swansea Bay, but are separated by wooded hill country and moors. The majority of the population lives in the narrow coastal strip and at the mouth of the River Neath in the cities of Neath (46,000 inhabitants) and Port Talbot (37,000 inhabitants). The hill country has mostly scattered settlements where even larger populations speak Welsh. Overall, over 17% of the population speak Welsh and another 11% speak the language.

Neath and Port Talbot have been characterized by mining and heavy industry since the 18th century, Port Talbot is still an important location for the steel industry and has a seaport. The region is linked to Cardiff and Bristol by the M4 motorway .

There were town twinning u. a. to Heilbronn and Esslingen am Neckar . Neath Port Talbot ended all of its twinning relationships in 2015 for financial reasons.
