Neath ( Welsh Castell Nedd ) is a middle town in Wales .
location
The city is located on the east, left bank on the lower reaches of the River Neath in South Wales, 11 km northeast of Swansea .
history
As early as 75 the Romans built a fort on the site of today's Neath. After the Norman conquest of South Wales , Robert of Gloucester built Neath Castle in the first half of the 12th century . In place of the castle, the Cistercian monastery Neath Abbey was built from 1130 , a new castle was built on the left bank of the River Neath. A settlement developed around this castle, which developed into a small market town and received a charter from Gilbert de Clare , Lord of Glamorgan, in 1280 . During the Reformation, Neath Abbey was disbanded. Because of the abundant energy sources in the surrounding valleys, hydroelectric power and coal, the metal industry developed early in Neath. From 1730 a copper smelter was built in the former monastery building . At the end of the 18th century, Neath Abbey Ironworks was established , one of the most important early industrial industries in Wales, using machines, locomotives and railroad tracks, e.g. B. for the Stockton and Darlington Railway , the first passenger line in the world. From 1921 Britain’s first large commercial oil refinery was built southwest of Neath , and the village of Llandarcy was founded for its workers . In 1985 the crude oil processing was stopped, in 1999 the plant, which covered an area of over 4 km², was closed. The systems were almost completely dismantled. The coal and steel industry has also disappeared from the area around Neath; the former Cefn Coed mine, which serves as a museum, is reminiscent of coal mining 8 km north.
In 1918 the Eisteddfod took place in Neath. The Borough of Neath became part of the new County West Glamorgan in 1974 , and in 1996 it was combined with Port Talbot and Pontardawe to form the new Neath Port Talbot County Borough .
