The road branches off from the A44 road in Bromyard and initially leads in a south-westerly direction to Hereford , where it crosses the A49 road , which runs in north-south direction, and the A4103 road, which runs north of the city . There it becomes the primary route and continues via Pontrilas and the border with Wales to Abergavenny ( Welsh Y Fenni ). The continuation of the road is expanded to four lanes until the junction of the A4060 road before Merthyr Tydfil ( Welsh Merthyr Tudful ). The road crosses the A470 road , continues via Hirwaun and, now again with four lanes, along the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park through the valley of the River Neath ( Afon Nedd in Welsh ) and ends at junction 43 of the M4 motorway .
