The A49 branches off the A40 road as the primary route at Ross-on-Wye not far from the southwest end of the M50 motorway and leads in a large right-hand bend to Hereford , where it crosses the A438 road . In a northerly direction it leads via Leominster , where the A44 road is crossed, and on via Ludlow to Shrewsbury , which it bypasses on a bypass, partly together with the A5 road, and crosses the Severn . North-east of Shrewsbury, the A53 road branches off to Newcastle-under-Lyme . The A49 approaches the Wales border at Whitchurch , which is bypassed to the west, and then, branching off the A41 road, follows the Llangollen Canal . It crosses the A534 road , the A51 road , the A54 road and the A556 road , passes Weaverham and crosses the A533 road , before it crosses the M56 motorway at its junction 10 . In Warrington the Manchester Ship Canal is crossed and the A56 road and A57 road are crossed. At junction 9, the road meets the M62 motorway and loses its character as a primary route. This is followed by the crossing of the A6 motorway at junction 23 and the densely populated area around Ashton-in-Makerfield in Greater Manchester . South of Wigan the road becomes the primary route again, bypasses Wigan at the intersection with the A577 road , gives the property as a primary route in Standish to the A5209 road and from then on runs parallel to the M6 until it comes to Bamber Bridge on the A6 road ends.
